Hymns 423, 136, 574

Shew me thy ways, O LORD; teach me thy paths.
(Psalms 25:4)

The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and his ears are open unto their cry.
(Psalms 34:15)

Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law. ...

Give me understanding, and I shall keep thy law; yea, I shall observe it with my whole heart. ...

Incline my heart unto thy testimonies, ...

... I hope in thy word. ...

... give me understanding according to thy word.
(Psalms 119:18, 34, 36 (to ,), 114 I, 169 give)

And Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father: only he sacrificed and burnt incense in high places. ...

... ¶ In Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night: and God said, Ask what I shall give thee. And Solomon said, Thou hast shewed unto thy servant David my father great mercy, according as he walked before thee in truth, and in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart with thee; and thou hast kept for him this great kindness, that thou hast given him a son to sit on his throne, as it is this day. And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king instead of David my father: and I am but a little child: I know not how to go out or come in. And thy servant is in the midst of thy people which thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered nor counted for multitude. Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people? And the speech pleased the Lord, that Solomon had asked this thing. And God said unto him, Because thou hast asked this thing, and hast not asked for thyself long life; neither hast asked riches for thyself, nor hast asked the life of thine enemies; but hast asked for thyself understanding to discern judgment; Behold, I have done according to thy words: lo, I have given thee a wise and an understanding heart; so that there was none like thee before thee, neither after thee shall any arise like unto thee.
(I Kings 3:3, 5–12)

¶ And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding exceeding much, and largeness of heart, even as the sand that is on the sea shore.
(I Kings 4:29)

The entrance of thy words giveth light; it giveth understanding unto the simple.
(Psalms 119:130)

Let not mercy and truth forsake thee: bind them about thy neck; write them upon the table of thine heart: So shalt thou find favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man. ¶ Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.
(Proverbs 3:3–5)

Then cometh he to a city of Samaria, which is called Sychar, near to the parcel of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied with his journey, sat thus on the well: ...

There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me to drink. ...

Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? for the Jews have no dealings with the Samaritans. Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? ...

Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. The woman saith unto him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. ...

... Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.
(John 4:5, 6 (to :), 7, 9–11, 13–15, 19 Sir)

Jesus saith unto her, Woman, believe me, the hour cometh, when ye shall neither in this mountain, nor yet at Jerusalem, worship the Father. Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. The woman saith unto him, I know that Messias cometh, which is called Christ: when he is come, he will tell us all things. Jesus saith unto her, I that speak unto thee am he. ...

The woman then left her waterpot, and went her way into the city, and saith to the men, Come, see a man, which told me all things that ever I did: is not this the Christ?
(John 4:21–26, 28, 29)

¶ Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.
(Matthew 6:19–22)

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? ...

But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
(Matthew 6:25, 33)

... he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow; And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up: Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth: And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away. And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them: But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold. Who hath ears to hear, let him hear. ...

But blessed are your eyes, for they see: and your ears, for they hear.
(Matthew 13:3–9 he, 16)

... therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: ...

... choose you this day whom ye will serve; ...
(Joshua 24:14 therefore (to :), 15 choose (to ;))

Now therefore hearken, O Israel, unto the statutes and unto the judgments, which I teach you, for to do them, that ye may live, and go in and possess the land which the LORD God of your fathers giveth you. Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish aught from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you. ...

But ye that did cleave unto the LORD your God are alive every one of you this day. ...

Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations, which shall hear all these statutes, and say, Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people. ...

Only take heed to thyself, and keep thy soul diligently, lest thou forget the things which thine eyes have seen, and lest they depart from thy heart all the days of thy life: but teach them thy sons, and thy sons’ sons; ...

But if from thence thou shalt seek the LORD thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul.
(Deuteronomy 4:1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 29)

Be still, and know that I am God: ...
(Psalms 46:10 (to :))

The LORD is nigh unto all them that call upon him, to all that call upon him in truth. He will fulfil the desire of them that fear him: he also will hear their cry, and will save them.
(Psalms 145:18, 19)

We never need to despair of an honest heart; ...

... If we feel the aspiration, humility, gratitude, and love which our words express, — this God accepts; ...
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 8:3 (only, to ;), 14–16 (to ;))

If the disciple is advancing spiritually, he is striving to enter in. He constantly turns away from material sense, and looks towards the imperishable things of Spirit. If honest, he will be in earnest from the start, and gain a little each day in the right direction, till at last he finishes his course with joy.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 21:9)

Seeking is not sufficient. It is striving that enables us to enter. Spiritual attainments open the door to a higher understanding of the divine Life.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 10:14)

Every step towards goodness is a departure from materiality, and is a tendency towards God, Spirit.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 213:11–12)

Man is tributary to God, Spirit, and to nothing else. God’s being is infinity, freedom, harmony, and boundless bliss. “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty.”
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 481:2–5)

Material sense never helps mortals to understand Spirit, God. Through spiritual sense only, man comprehends and loves Deity. The various contradictions of the Science of Mind by the material senses do not change the unseen Truth, which remains forever intact.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 481:7–12)

Spirit imparts the understanding which uplifts consciousness and leads into all truth.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 505:16–17)

Spiritual sense is the discernment of spiritual good. Understanding is the line of demarcation between the real and unreal. Spiritual understanding unfolds Mind, — Life, Truth, and Love, — and demonstrates the divine sense, giving the spiritual proof of the universe in Christian Science.

This understanding is not intellectual, is not the result of scholarly attainments; it is the reality of all things brought to light.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 505:20–28)

Mind is not necessarily dependent upon educational processes. It possesses of itself all beauty and poetry, and the power of expressing them. Spirit, God, is heard when the senses are silent.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 89:18–21)

As mortals gain more correct views of God and man, multitudinous objects of creation, which before were invisible, will become visible. When we realize that Life is Spirit, never in nor of matter, this understanding will expand into self-completeness, finding all in God, good, and needing no other consciousness.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 264:13)

The pains of sense are salutary, if they wrench away false pleasurable beliefs and transplant the affections from sense to Soul, where the creations of God are good, “rejoicing the heart.” Such is the sword of Science, with which Truth decapitates error, materiality giving place to man’s higher individuality and destiny.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 265:31)

Material sense does not unfold the facts of existence; but spiritual sense lifts human consciousness into eternal Truth. Humanity advances slowly out of sinning sense into spiritual understanding; unwillingness to learn all things rightly, binds Christendom with chains.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 95:30)

Spiritual sense, contradicting the material senses, involves intuition, hope, faith, understanding, fruition, reality. Material sense expresses the belief that mind is in matter. This human belief, alternating between a sense of pleasure and pain, hope and fear, life and death, never reaches beyond the boundary of the mortal or the unreal. When the real is attained, which is announced by Science, joy is no longer a trembler, nor is hope a cheat. Spiritual ideas, like numbers and notes, start from Principle, and admit no materialistic beliefs. Spiritual ideas lead up to their divine origin, God, and to the spiritual sense of being.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 298:13)

Spirit imparts the understanding which uplifts consciousness and leads into all truth. ...
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 505:16–17, 20)

Consciousness constructs a better body when faith in matter has been conquered. Correct material belief by spiritual understanding, and Spirit will form you anew. You will never fear again except to offend God, and you will never believe that heart or any portion of the body can destroy you.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 425:23)

Faith, advanced to spiritual understanding, is the evidence gained from Spirit, which rebukes sin of every kind and establishes the claims of God.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 23:17)

Question. — How can I progress most rapidly in the understanding of Christian Science?

Answer. — Study thoroughly the letter and imbibe the spirit. Adhere to the divine Principle of Christian Science and follow the behests of God, abiding steadfastly in wisdom, Truth, and Love.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 495:25–31)

Prayer cannot change the unalterable Truth, nor can prayer alone give us an understanding of Truth; but prayer, coupled with a fervent habitual desire to know and do the will of God, will bring us into all Truth.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 11:27–31)

Hold perpetually this thought, — that it is the spiritual idea, the Holy Ghost and Christ, which enables you to demonstrate, with scientific certainty, the rule of healing, based upon its divine Principle, Love, underlying, overlying, and encompassing all true being.
(Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, Mary Baker Eddy, p. 496:15)
